IDK about you guys but since i was knee high on a June bug I’ve been told “theres always two” when it comes to deer crossing the road.

Kinja'd!!!

The thought there is if you see one cross ahead of you slow down and expect another to follow. Awhile ago I we were driving some where and I was explaining this to my kid, and my wife says “well not always”. and told me thats just a silly saying, not a reality.

I disagree.

Well this morning a deer crossed in front of me. it wandered over to the left side of the road as I got closer. I slowed down. As I got real close the first deer was basically in the ditch on the far side of the road. Thankfully I wasn’t looking at it, I was watching my ditch for number 2. Then out pops number two. It darts over to the other one and I had to slam on my brakes.

The point is THERE IS ALWAYS TWO.

here’s a slammed Dodge for you time. hah Dodge

A master and an apprentice. One to warn the traffic, one to test them.

Not always, but you should always drive as though there are.

I find myself applying that concept in a variety of scenarios  while driving. If I’m going through some twisty blind corners and a car passes me going the other direction, I assume there are more behind it, and I’m rarely wrong.

Two or more. Three for me , last night (that I saw).

It’s VERY good advice. If you see 1, there’s a very high probability there’s more. So you better not fixate on the one.

They tend to travel in groups, so yeah if you see one (even if it’s not in the road) expect others nearby. The one I came within about an inch of hitting was alone though.

Yup, like my dad always says there are always two, even if you don’t see the other one it was there.

if there is one alone its usually a big buck. Nearly hit an 8 pointer, about 9: 30pm last Thursday, who walking through town. He even used the crosswalk.

I can across a heard once...it was crazy and is still the most deer I’ve ever seen in one place.

Three were crossing the road, there were another 3 or 4 coming behind them, then I look toward the field they were heading towards and there were another 12-15. It was nuts. Only time high capacity magazine  for hunting would actually be useful.

I’ve always stuck to that rule while driving, and it’s saved me several times . Unfortunately for this being my first year trying to hunt, whenever I drove to the woods I always saw 2 in the road, but from my perch there were instead always 0.

Yeah, does travel in groups with the fawns, and maybe a single dominant buck, but all the other bucks get pushed out on their own.

Rarely do I see 2, it’s usually 3, but often it’s just one. Sure, it’s fine to be cautious , but it’s not always two.

It’s not a bad rule of thumb. More than one is probably better. I’ve seen them in herds(?).

Don’t tell them that when you get back to camp! You saw a whole stack of em. Decided to be a good sportsman and let them all grow up. You will get them next year.

Repeat story next year.

‘ Dear oh dear’ is not just a mindless lament you know.

You may also be interested to know that this same principle typically applies to emu as well.
